Why are potential clients settling for package type deals (i.e. bronze, silver, gold packages)? Your investment should not fall under the standard packages your pool builder presents, instead, it should require the standards set forth by you, the homeowner. Understand key points in order to steer your pool consultation into educated conversations involving hydrodynamics, turnover rate, & suction/return placement/quantity. The best clients also tend to be the most informed clients. Understand the importance of being educated on topics that affect the longevity of your pool build, do your research, and ask questions!
Hydrodynamics: Hydrodynamics is the branch of fluid mechanics that deals with the behavior of fluids in motion. In the context of swimming pools, hydrodynamics can be applied to understand how water moves, how swimmers interact with that water, and how various hydrodynamic designs affect water flow and pool water clarity. To signify the importance of hydrodynamics in the swimming pool industry, it is critical to understand how pool water moves throughout your vessel of water. Water in swimming pools is dependent on pump suction for circulation. It is drawn through meticulously placed skimmers and main drains in order to pull water from the pool and then, push water through the filtration equipment located on the equipment pad. Placement of skimmers and main drains are different on all pools due to the location and direction the pool faces. For example, most winds occur on the westside of Cleveland, Ohio from the NW direction. Therefore, it would be smart to locate a skimmer in the SE corner of your pool. In doing so, NW winds will naturally allow surface debris to flow into the direction of the skimmer while enduring less resistance. Most high end pool builds will allot for greater than one skimmer to maximize the efficiency of the system as well as create an environment for a lighter workload to be placed on the consumer in terms of pool maintenance. Main drains on the other hand should be placed at the lowest points of the pool. At Chlorine Free Pool Systems, our preferred main drain is a debris handling main drain. A debris handling main drain will serve a dual purpose; one, pulling cool water from the lower depths of the pool and send it to the equipment pad to be heated, and two, pull settled debris from the floors of the pool to eliminate the need for manual deep water pool skimming. A minimum of one debris handling main drain should be mandatory, while additional water-only main drains can be added to eliminate dead spots on the pool floor. In conclusion, it should be of the upmost importance for individuals to consult their pool professional on how many and which locations are best to incorporate these suction ports to not only achieve proper water circulation, but to also lessen the need to manually clean your pool when debris is present.
Turnover Rate: Water turnover rate refers to the time it takes for all the water in your pool/spa to be filtered and circulated, a critical element for maintaining water clarity and quality. Set forth by the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), all swimmable vessels of water should "provide a turnover rate... not less than once every 12 hours" (810.1 Turnover Rate, ISPSC). Therefore, it is their minimum recommendation that swimming pools and spas should have a turnover rate no less than twice per day. On a high end commercial or residential pool build looking to satisfy adequate pool circulation and cleanliness, the professionals at Chlorine Free Pool Systems shoot for pools and spas to have a turnover rate in the range of 6-10 times per day. This range will ensure strong filtration, eradicate dead spots, and minimize the need for you, the pool owner, to manually clean and scrub your vessel. Design your pool to outperform the market, and allow your setup to take care of the "work" for you.
Pool Return Quantity and Placement: The term pool return refers to the inlets in your pool and spa that push filtered and heated water back to the swimming vessel. A pool return should be placed 2' from all interior pool corners minimum. Therefore, on a rectangle pool, a minimum of four pool returns should be incorporated into your pool build. These returns should be directed in a slightly downward, circular pattern; in such a position where you can only just begin seeing the surface of the water to be agitated. This positioning will allow the water to never remain stagnant while providing a continuous circular motion of water that can be collected by the installed skimmers and main drains. In a high end pool build, significantly more returns will be apparent. A high end pool installer will offer a minimum of four returns to be dedicated for surface level circulation, while offering additional returns to be installed using infusion venturi fittings. These fittings specialize in washing the pool walls and pushing water along the pool floor to adequately remove any and all dead spots inherent in your pool build (i.e. tanning ledges, benches, steps, etc.).
Ultimately, when deciding to construct a pool, it is a clinical feat to preliminarily understand how water will move in your vessel. By doing so, you will circumvent any potential issues that may be holding your pool back from performing at a high level. This will also save you lots of hours from needing to manually scrub and clean your pool of debris. The three topics discussed in this article are a fraction of knowledge that should be consumed prior to constructing your pool build, but ultimately play a huge role in the performance and longevity of your personal oasis.
